Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if this is the right fit for me?

This service is suited to adults who are wanting to better understand themselves, work through difficulties, and make meaningful changes over time.

If you’re feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or noticing patterns that aren’t shifting, therapy may be helpful. An initial session can help clarify whether this approach feels like a good fit for you.

Do I need a referral to book?

No, you can book an appointment directly.

If you would like to access Medicare rebates, you will need a valid Mental Health Care Plan and referral from your GP prior to your first session.

What is a Mental Health Care Plan and how do I use it?

A Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) is organised through your GP and allows you to access Medicare rebates for psychological therapy.

In most cases, your GP can refer you for an initial set of 6 sessions, with the option for an additional 4 sessions following review with your GP- allowing up to 10 Medicare rebate-eligible psychology sessions per calendar year.

To use it:

  • Book a GP appointment and request a Mental Health Care Plan

  • Ask for a referral addressed to Kia Psychology

  • Ensure the referral is provided before your first session (via email or fax to Kia Psychology)

You’re welcome to book your appointment now and organise this with your GP beforehand.

What happens in the first session?

The initial session focuses on understanding your current concerns, background, and what you would like to get out of therapy.

We will also begin to identify patterns and discuss a direction for ongoing sessions. You’re not expected to have everything figured out; the session is structured to guide this process.

From there, we’ll collaboratively develop a treatment plan, outlining what we’ll focus on and how therapy will be approached. This means you’ll leave the session with a clearer understanding of your goals, the direction of treatment, and what ongoing sessions are likely to involve.

What is therapy actually like?

Therapy is collaborative and structured.

Sessions typically involve:

  • Exploring thoughts, emotions, and patterns

  • Making sense of experiences

  • Developing practical strategies

  • Working towards meaningful changes over time

The pace and focus are adjusted based on your needs.

How long does therapy take?

This varies depending on your goals and the complexity of what you’re working through.

Some people attend for a shorter period with a specific focus, while others engage in longer-term work. This is reviewed collaboratively throughout therapy.

Is telehealth as effective as in-person therapy?

Research has found telehealth to be just as effective as face-to-face therapy when the same evidence-based approaches were used.

Telehealth also offers practical benefits, including increased flexibility, reduced travel time, and the ability to attend from a familiar environment, which some people find helps them engage more comfortably.

That said, the suitability of telehealth can vary depending on individual needs and preferences, and this can be discussed during your initial session.

Is this a crisis service?

Kia Psychology is not a crisis service. If you are in crisis, are experiencing suicidal or homicidal thoughts, or somebody else is in danger, please call Emergency 000 (Triple Zero), Lifeline on 13 11 14, and the Mental Health Access Line on 1300 642 255 (1300 MH CALL).
